My favorite thing about the scene where the crew puts on the naval uniforms is how they all make the uniforms their own. The captains are resplendent in the full uniform, complete with tricorne hats. Jackie made sure to get one with with lace cuffs and an elegant jabot. Oluwande and Auntie added their iconic necklaces. Swede nixed the waistcoat in favor of one of his slutty crop tops. Lucius tied his cravat into a little bow. Pete cut the sleeves off of his for some reason

My dad went into hospice care earlier this week.

So he’s dying. On his own terms, how he wants.

I am … okay, actually, but I do find myself tripping over it in weird ways. Like, I’m having a hard time reading. Crocheting I can definitely do (I made four jellyfish can cozies today), but social media is hit or miss. Haven’t written anything since, like, Thursday, but my dreams have a lot of plot and the WIPs seem willing to hibernate and not wither.

(I think he would be really pissed if this fucked up my writing for more than a few days, actually. To be fair, he was always like “don’t grieve for me, blah blah, long life” and I would respond with “how are you going to stop me, old man, you’ll be dead,” but I will do my best to get back on it and write some shit that would make him wonder where the hell that came from—and the answer would be him. My weird ass brain is 75% his fault.)

I also have lots of thoughts, of course. About my father and our relationship. I’m sad but not as sad as I would expect, I think because I know this is how he wants it to be. (God help me, he has been telling my mother and me for fucking ever exactly how he would prefer to die, so we don’t even have to make educated guesses.)

Anyway. I felt like I ought to let my invisible Internet friends know what’s going on. If you want to honor Old Man Seldnei’s Dad somehow, pet a good dog, or wear a cool hat, or watch a Mel Brooks movie this week.

Last night, around 11:30pm, my father died. It was peaceful.

Work sib texted me, “Other than crappy, how are you doing?” and really, I am just … feeling crappy, but doing ok for the situation.

Kiddo and Mom are about where I am, Mr. Seldnei is taking care of everyone via food and forcing me off the couch every so often, Q was napping nearby and then showing me art on the phone before work, and MIL every so often ruffles my hair and asks “How ya doing, girl?”

And the BFFs are responding to my random-ass texts about the Dolly Parton cover of “What’s Going On” and whether or not missionary sex between Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein can be considered kinky, like besties do.

Now I have 20 minutes to write some gothic horror.
